The Market Table is one of those special New York Restaurants which seems to have hit upon the magical recipe of having a perfect location with the kind of menu which makes one glad that at least one New York Restaurant has not succumbed to the idea that good food needs to be complicated to be desirable. Quite the contrary, the Market Table's menu reflects the eatery's earlier incarnation as a part-market part-dining room and offers a range of flavors and morsels designed to inspire the imagination and stir the appetite long before the plate reaches the table.
This simple recipe of worthy dishes treated to a touch of flare and culinary sophistication is evidenced by the fact that it is nearly impossible to get a table during the peak hours unless you book at least three weeks in advance. Those who find themselves enveloped in the candle-lit warmth, the vast windows taking in the tableau of Greenwich Village nightlife, are likely to feel the warmth and conviviality which is as much a part of dining at this remarkable New York Restaurants as any of the tasty dishes.
Discerning diners may sometimes have a whim for the delicate and recondite, but the robust and hearty is the very essence of what makes for a love of good food. Chef Mikey Price's kitchen has robust delights to trump the short-lived rewards of any nouvelle nuance and set his culinary vision firmly in your soul.
The Beet Salad appetizer is a must for lovers of the earthy magnificence of beautifully realized roots. While is may be a staple on many of the city's menus, this is particularly inspired affair brought to life by different beets, a bed of horseradish cream as well as having the additional pungent freshness of goat's cheese and the simply delicious crown of crispy shallots. Like the Roasted Duck and Kale Soup with Acorn Squash and Cracklings, it's a perfect introduction to the array of hearty flavors which make up the selection of entrees.
Grilled Lamb Chops are a perennial favorite and when complemented by gouda-potato fondue, zucchini and provencal, it becomes perfectly clear why those who want their food both nourishing and inspired are the ones who fill the tables at this most warming of New York Restaurants.
Like the unpretentious and uncluttered flavors of the menu, the wine list is equally its own. Offering wines from the world over, something ideal for whichever tasty bite you happen to be washing down, you're likely to be able to have a bottle of something loved and lovely as equally as you are to find a few new well-bottled friends.
Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, you might be lucky enough to get a table without having to wait for your dinner booking to arrive, but for the full magical warmth and the vibrant feeling of good food in good company, you best get on the phone as soon as you can.
